Position within the Company
COMPANY SECRETARY, Board Member, Shareholder – Ensures Companies House legal requirements and responsibilities are met. Attends monthly Board Meetings at which Lilian monitors the company’s current performance; reviews minutes of all monthly meetings and discusses the company’s future strategy with the other members of the Board of Directors. Works with John on marketing projects.
Background
Born in South Shields in 1943. Qualified as a secretary with specialised shorthand and typing skills in 1959. PA to company directors of various local companies and then Bill Embleton OBE, Vice Principal of South Shields Marine and Technical College until marrying John in January 1967.
In 1969 Lilian gave birth to twins David and Julie and in 1974, when the twins were 5, she worked as a part time secretary for a director of the local Venetian Blind Service Centre, where John later became Factory Manager. Inevitably since 1976 Lilian has been a key player in the success of the family business which is now Solar Solve Marine.
Interesting facts
Two months after getting married Lilian went off to sea with John on the Shell Tanker ‘Anadara’ and she soon realised it was going to be a very interesting ‘honeymoon’. They arrived in Athens just after the military junta overthrew King Constantine and there were tanks in the streets. Three weeks later the ‘Anadara’ sailed through the Suez Canal 2 days before the Arab-Israeli 6-Day War, when extensive troop movements were taking place during a period of heightened tension and narrowly avoiding becoming a casualty and possibly ending up as one of the many vessels stranded in the Bitter Lakes for years afterwards. Three weeks after, the vessel loaded a cargo in the Persian Gulf and headed for Singapore to do a 2 month stint on the Viet Nam run supplying aviation fuel to the American and allied forces serving in the war zone.
Interests/Hobbies
Lilian enjoys gardening immensely because she gets a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from the beautiful views that result from her many hours of dedicated labour.
She also enjoys world wide travel which includes 2 or 3 weeks out of every 2 months, in Florida with John and visiting other places of special interest such as China, Egypt, Africa, Jordan, India and Mexico with lots more places still left to visit.
