Carbon footprint 2010 - 2011

SOLAR SOLVE MARINE CAN HELP YOU TO BE SEEN TO BE GREEN

SAVE POWER, SAVE MONEY, REDUCE GREEN HOUSE GASSES

SOLASOLV ® - THE CAPTAINS’ CHOICE

UP TO 81% SAVINGS IN POWER

AND A POSSIBLE $1,300 PER YEAR

COST SAVING FOR LARGER VESSELS

WITH SOLASOLV ® SCREENS IN USE, SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS ARE LIKELY, SO READ ON..… Whenever you are cooling or heating the wheelhouse environment and SOLASOLV ® screens are in use, you will be saving money and improving a vessel’s carbon footprint by reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.

How much you save depends on a wide number of variables including 6 main ones-:

  1. Size of the wheelhouse
  2. Route sailed
  3. Outside air temperature / weather conditions
  4. Inside air temperature
  5. Unit cost of power
  6. The SOLASOLV ® shade film selected; Silver and Gold being the most effective power savers

The research was carried out to quantify the actual power savings that can be expected when SOLASOLV® marine shades are in use on the basis that the savings in energy will result in reductions in GHG emissions as well as the financial rewards of savings in costs that would offset the initial financial outlay to have the SOLASOLV® screens installed.

There are also the major benefits of the product’s main features - glare reduction and uv light absorption - both of which contribute to enhancement of the crew’s working environment and verify its reputation as an effective NAVIGATION SAFETY AID.

To quantify the cost savings in terms of dollars for a particular customer or vessel is impossible, unless the exact trading routes, weather conditions, time of day etc are all precisely known. However, from the report’s findings we can quote hypothetical figures on which customers can base their own conclusions and opinions.

We see the reductions in air-con power consumption, cost and GHG emissions as an extra bonus because Solar Solve Marine has always maintained the main features and benefits of SOLASOLV® roller screens are as a Navigation Safety Aid.

When considering choice of film type, if the aesthetics of the film colour are not important then the 2 main factors are glare reduction and heat rejection. Of these, glare reduction is probably the most important from the end user’s / navigator’s point of view as it directly effects his main function of being able to clearly see out of the wheelhouse windows and to easily read all of the VDU’s. The most effective films at rejecting glare are Gold and Silver.

When it comes to heat rejection there can be a huge difference between the film colours. Data from the report confirms this. For example - A Cargo vessel with a Small Wheelhouse, en-route from Bellmullet to St. Johns (Atlantic Ocean Region) with SOLASOLV® Bronze shade film screens in use will only save 4% of power. If the screens were Silver shade film the power saving would be 25%, or 6 times more power saved.

However, another example is - A Ferry with a Large Wheelhouse, from Cadiz to Tenerife (Atlantic Ocean Region) with SOLASOLV® Bronze shade film screens in use will save 55% of power. If the screens were Silver shade film the power saving would be 73%, or 1.3 times more power saved.

Whilst 1.3 is a lot less than 6 it still puts Silver out in front as the Power Saving Leader but highlights the fact that it may not be as dramatic in all wheelhouse situations.

Below is a random selection of potential savings in air conditioning power for various types of vessel on hypothetical routes and with SOLASOLV® screens in use at the navigation bridge windows, with suggested cost savings in US Dollars per year in brackets.

A Ferry with a Large Wheelhouse, en-route from Hull to Amsterdam (North Sea Region) with SOLASOLV® Silver shade film screens in use = 81% power saving. ($357)

A Ferry with a Small Wheelhouse, en-route from Napoli to Cagliari (Mediterranean Sea Region) with SOLASOLV® Grey shade film screens in use = 34% power saving. ($42)

A Ferry with a Medium Wheelhouse, en-route from Cadiz to Tenerife (Atlantic Ocean Region) with SOLASOLV® Gold shade film screens in use = 63% power saving. ($657)

A Cargo vessel with a Large Wheelhouse, en-route from Havana to Jersey, UK (North Sea Region) with SOLASOLV® Silver shade film screens in use = 68% power saving. ($1,034)

A Cargo vessel with a Small Wheelhouse, en-route from Cadiz to Larnica (Mediterranean Sea Region) with SOLASOLV® Grey shade film screens in use = 23% power saving. ($63)

A Cargo vessel with a Medium Wheelhouse, en-route from Bellmullet to St. Johns (Atlantic Ocean Region) with SOLASOLV® Gold shade film screens in use = 51% power saving. ($97)

A Ferry with a Large Wheelhouse, en-route from Cadiz to Tenerife (Atlantic Ocean Region) with SOLASOLV® Silver shade film screens in use = 73% power saving. ($1,304)

It is unlikely that any vessel would meet ALL of the necessary conditions to benefit from the hypothetical maximum savings but extremely likely that they would meet some of the conditions, which would guarantee some savings in air conditioning power consumption resulting in less fuel used and fewer GHG emissions. These would be additional benefits associated with a product that is predominantly a Navigation Safety Aid to assist the ships navigation officers with their primary duties.

Savings that are made when SOLASOLV® roller screens are in use will offset their initial cost and the reduced GHG emissions will enhance a vessel’s carbon footprint, not to mention the significant benefits to ships crew with helping to improve their working environment and enabling them to carry out their daily tasks more effectively, efficiently and safely.
