It was just 3 months ago when South Shields based Solar Solve Marine gave out the news that  an order they had just dispatched to South Korea was destined for the Mega Container Ship ‘Madrid Maersk’, currently the world’s biggest container ship and due to be delivered from the Daewoo shipyard this month, April 2017.

We hope the people involved with the vessel will take much pride in her throughout her lifetime but particularly between now and 1st August 2017, which is when OCCL’s first vessel, which will be able to carry 1,000 more containers, is due to be delivered.  A few weeks later a sister vessel will be delivered, with a further four ships completing the series;  all of them will be delivered by the end of November 2017.

It was on 1 April 2015 when Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had received an order for six units of 21,100 TEU-class ultra-large container ships from OOCL (Hong Kong) and that the order is valued at about $950 million.  The contract includes options for six more vessels, so it is likely that SHI and SSM will receive additional related orders.

All of the ships are 400m long and 58.8m wide, a similar specification to the 20,100TEU-class ships previously ordered. However, the newly ordered ones can load 1,000 more 20-feet containers, as they accommodate one more layer of containers.

The multi-award-winning team at Solar Solve Marine were jubilant when they were advised of their successful bid to supply their brand leading SOLASAFE roller sunscreens for installation at the navigation bridge windows of each ship, to protect personnel from the hazards of solar glare and radiation.  They have already sent out the screens for the first two vessels in the series.

John Lightfoot MBE, Solar Solve Marine’s chairman commented, “I think everyone must realise that for Solar Solve to be continually selected as the supplier of choice for such significant ships is not a coincidence.  The SOLASOLV products being supplied for this contract are the only ones of their type in the world to be Type Approved by 3 classification societies.”

“As well as our reputation for quality of product we are also legendary for the first class service that we give to our customers, who appreciate it and regularly get back to us to tell us so.  We have created a Testimonials page on our brand new website that has just gone live.  It will contain some of the hundreds of customer commendations that we have received over the last 30 years.”
