Inevitably at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere the angle of the sun lowers to the point where it is low lying during the day. This can pose a real problem for ships that often sail in a fixed direction for long periods of time.
The glare and reflection the sun generates can make navigating difficult at any time of the year. In sunny and bright conditions mariners need to ensure that the sun does not compromise the safe passage of the vessel to minimise the chance of shipping accidents and ensure the safety of the crew, passengers and cargo.

Regulations have also been published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to support the use of removable sunscreens on all vessels to overcome problems associated with the sun. IMO 5.1.1.2.6 specifies: “To ensure a clear view and to avoid reflections in bright sunshine, sunscreens with a minimum colour distortion should be provided at all windows. Such screens should be readily removable and not permanently installed”.
