At the end of last year Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC Berhad) held the naming and delivery ceremony of its new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Seri Camellia in South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard, before departing on its maiden voyage from South Korea to Bintulu, Malaysia.

The 150,200 cbm carrier is the first in a series of five MOSS-Type LNG carriers ordered as part of the company’s long term fleet expansion programme.  The new LNG carriers will be chartered to the Malaysian oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) for the next 15 years.

“It is a historic occasion for MISC as Seri Camellia will be part of the new generation of LNG carriers that incorporate state-of-the art technologies in various forms, including the Integrated Hull Structure (IHS) with four spherical tanks shielded by the continuous cover, which improves the overall structural strength of the hull,” MISC said.

Additional green technology features adopted for the new carriers include energy efficiency, emissions reductions, biodiversity management, end-of-life disposal and the installation of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for the diesel generator to comply with the latest IMO Tier III requirement and the Ozone Ballast Water Treatment System.

When they are delivered from the shipyard to the owners, twenty-five of South Shields based Solar Solve Marine’s brand leading, Type Approved SOLASAFE roller sunscreens will be installed at the wheelhouse windows of all five ships, as a navigation safety aid to protect personnel from the vagaries of sun and ice by reducing glare and rejecting heat and cold.  They will comply with the latest SOLAS recommendations to improve the working environment on a vessel’s navigation bridge.

Julie Lightfoot, Solar Solve Marine’s Managing Director said, “This order is great news for Solar Solve and once again we acknowledge the effort put in by Samgong Co. Ltd, our Korean based Distributor, who won the order for us and with whom we work very closely, on a daily basis.  SOLASOLV products are the only ones to be Type Approved by Lloyds, ABS and DNV-GL and are the Korean shipbuilders’ first choice.  We all take the welfare and working conditions of a vessel’s crew very seriously.”
